Researchers from Disney have perfected the good old vacuum forming method. Their new method enables creating pre-painted objects by just printing over the plastic sheet that will later be vacuum formed. The results are incredibly detailed objects that are very easy to manufacture.
The research results are being shared on social network sites, such as Vocativ. They are a bit misleading when they describe this as a 3D printing technology when this isn’t that. It is rather a very powerful way of doing pre-painted vacuum formed objects, and they have called it Computational Thermoforming.
I’m sure you are all thinking about the incredible potential this has for modelling and wargaming purposes of course. Easy and cheap wargaming terrain with highly realistic paintjobs? Yes please! Can’t wait!
