Zombicide Black Plague, Guillotine Games / Coolminiornot

In June 2015, “Coolminiornot” attacked again with an expansion of the game which, in my opinion, is their most famous product in the boardgame market: Zombicide.

This time, they released a crowdfunding campaign to develop a new version of their famous game in a fantasy medieval setting. This project was called “Zombicide: Black Plague” and as their previous versions, it was a huge success.

Since the author of this post suffers from a compulsive disorder to buy everything that is good, nice and cheap (as many of you readers probably do too), I can present to you now the review of my copy of Zombicide Black Plague as well as all the extras that came with the campaign.

ZOMBICIDE BLACK PLAGUE REVIEW

My first impression upon receiving Zombicide Black Plague is of pure delight. Loads of miniatures and exquisite taste as to the topic of the product.

MAIN BOX

zombicide-black-plague-03

I open the Zombicide Black Plague box and I see that everything is millimetrically calculated. I stumble upon the ruleset and the different pieces that compose the boardgame as well as game cards. I will leave this part aside as usual to concentrate on the interesting part for us: miniatures.

At first sight we see that the main characters of the game come in a brown colour that is different from the zombies that will swarm the board.

The material is common in this type of product, a plastic that is quite flexible and soft and will probably be problematic for priming. This issues can be solved with a careful and detailed cleaning of the miniatures with plenty of soap and water.

Despite this, you can see that the detail is exquisite. Sometimes we run into some mold lines that are impossible to remove properly, but all in all these are just isolated cases (at least in my copy ;)).

HUNTSMAN PACK BOX

There is a double miniature tray, in the same material and finish. As a curiosity there are different characters coming from movies, very common in the Zombicide saga: the Goblin King from ‘Labyrinth’, Vlad Tepes from Coppola’s ‘Dracula’ movie, William Wallace from ‘Braveheart’, etc.

NOTORIOUS PLAGUED CHARACTERS BOX

zombicide-black-plague-28

This box has more zombies but with special features in the game. With regards to the sculptures, we see these are in line with the rest.

ZOMBIE BOSSES BOX

zombicide-black-plague-36

Wonderful sculptures of a considerable size. These are the final bosses in the adventures, and regarding detail and quality, they follow the same standards. I am very surprised with the scale of the miniatures, they are really big.

HERO BOX-1

zombicide-black-plague-44

More characters to play. Loyal to the cover art, some of the Zombicide concepts.

GUEST ARTIST BOXES

The rest of the boxes are player characters inspired in the work of great illustrators. Here you can see the cover of the box and the miniatures.

CONCLUSIONS

Without a doubt this is a game with magnificent miniatures, worthy of any collector who may only spend time painting, with the great bonus that they will be purchasing a game too, which apparently (I’ve been told so) is a delight to play and very addictive.
With regards to the miniatures, technically speaking it’s a bit unfortunate that the material used in the copies is so “bad”. I say it in between quotes because I am aware that the objective of these miniatures is not showcase painting, but rather gaming, and for this, this soft plastic is perfect.

PROS:

  • A huge amount of miniatures for a more than affordable price. This is always a great plus.
  • The quality of the details in each of the miniatures is more than acceptable.
  • Guest artist boxes are a great plus in this crowdfunding, and there are great miniature jewels in this game.

CONS:

  • The casting material. Not the best for our hobby.
  • Mold lines are too thick in some cases, and there are places where this is very difficult to solve.

  1. Great Review! We can not be more in line with Norberto comments.

Those of you who know me, also know i am more a game painter than a model painter, so the great improvement on the quality of the miniatures games are including nowadays is very good wellcome, and CoolMiniOrNot is the leader on this maket in our opinion.
Some of the miniatures included on those games, for example the ones on the guest boxes as said in the review, could deserve a more detailed paintwork than the paint we normally do for ‘tabletop standard’
